So the day was finally here – we’d been planning, saving + looking forward to it for months and it was finally time to board the plane and begin the adventure!
We woke early, about 5.30am and headed to the airport for emotional goodbyes with our parents and a big goodbye to the UK!
Ready to board our first flight – London Heathrow to Hong Kong International and a connecting flight to our destination and first backpacking stop, Ho Chi Minh City, Southern Vietnam.
Having never flown with Cathay Pacific (or actually heard of them) they impressed beyond belief + it’s pretty easy to understand why they’re the 5th best airline in the world!
With the biggest film/tv series selection I’ve ever seen, and regularly serving Häagen-Dazs ice cream pots, I was easily sold and our 12 hour long flight was suddenly much more bareable!
From what we saw flying over and from sat in the airport terminal, Hong Kong looks gorgeous, and I am definitely adding it to my list of places I want to travel to and explore.
Unfortunately we only had a short stopover of an hour and a half, before boarding our second Cathay Pacific flight to Ho Chi Minh City! Thankfully, this flight was only a few hours, as we were shattered after 18 hours of travelling.
We landed in a busy + boiling Ho Chi Minh City – even at 10am it was well over 30 degrees!
Heading straight through passport patrol and immigration, we picked up my rucksack straight away, and then waited and panicked for 30 minutes when my travel buddy, Gemma’s backpack, didn’t follow… Thankfully, we both have got our stuff eventually and grabbed a taxi to our hotel.
We’d previously decided that because of the travelling, time difference and possibly jet lag, and to help settle in to a new country, we decided to ‘treat ourselves’ to a nice hotel.. the Hoang Ngan Hotel.
For £10 each a night, £10 each! Our room had everything we needed and was really quite amazing. As a British person, £10 a night for a hotel is just unheard of and the water in our mini fridge was again, a staggering 30p! What a budget backpacker’s dream!
(I think it took about 30 seconds for the room to become messy and for my stuff to be everywhere… oops)
A quick power nap was then awoken by the sound of thunder and rain hammering down on the roof like you’d only see in.. well, the UK quite frankly, but despite this, the hustle and bustle of the streets continued, the army of mopeds on the roads simply adorned their rainmacks and went on their way and Gemma and I remained people-watching in one of the craziest cities I’ve ever been to.
With a jam packed itinerary, and so much to explore in the two weeks we are in Vietnam, the adrenaline is pumping and we’re unbelievably ready for the adventure.
Will be updating my little blog as regularly as I can with tips, tricks, photos, stories + the adventures we’ve been on, so please stay tuned if you’d like to hear more!
Next stop.. the Mekong River Fishing Village, the Cu Chi Tunnels & our first experience on a sleeper train to Nha Trang!
Thanks for reading!
